POD - Inkjet printing product philosophy

Truepress Jet
Screen is developing the Truepress Jet series of inkjet devices in response to the fast growing POD / Inkjet printing industry. Screen is covering a wide range of market sectors by combining its cutting edge colour inkjet technology with Screen's image processing and printing knowledge.

History
In its long graphic arts supplier history, Screen has continued to grow by maintaining a leading position in the technology that is reaching maturity while emerging as a major supplier in a new generation of equipment.
The coming years will be challenging in terms of change and Screen has already laid the foundations for continued success in the era of Print on Demand (POD) by developing a new range of inkjet products, hence our strap-line:  ‘Creating a Future in Print’.

To illustrate why Screen is the ideal partner for POD we give a quick review of history:
If we looked at the printing process even 30 years ago we would have found many different steps: each a distinct processes with specialist skills and specialist equipment: scanners; cameras; paste-up’ film output; retouching; planning; plate-making; proofing and or course printing. While every step was important a simple rule has always applied to printing and that is the better the quality of origination, the better the printed result.

Over time, the number of stages has been reduced. However, managing colour images as well as different screening techniques still make the difference between good printing and bad. These are all areas where Screen has excelled, so as the processes have been reduced, Screen has always been at the heart of quality control. At each stage, the knowledge of how to create a solid foundation for colour printing has driven our business.

POD sees this process reach its logical conclusion as files are sent directly to the printing press so this knowledge of colour, this knowledge of screening and the precision control that has always characterised Screen products have come together in putting ink on paper.

Environment
Screen is based in Kyoto a city that was home to probably the most famous environmental event the world has seen. Subsequently, Kyoto has taken a proactive role in ensuring that its businesses reduce their impact on global warming. Screen is an active participant in an accreditation procedure called Eco Kyoto 21. In fact Screen has been working to reduce emissions and waste as well as exploring ways to build more environmentally responsible machinery since 1994.

Energy consumption is one of the important measures of any new machine and this is something that Screen has focused on. The Truepress Jet520 for example uses just one tenth of the energy of some of it main competitors. Over the lifetime of the machine, this can have a dramatic impact on both the running costs of the machine and its carbon footprint.

Each Truepress Jet combines many different unique Screen technologies:

High quality
Screening technology
Screening is one of the core factors for print quality and this lies at the heart of all of Screen POD devices. Screen's original screening technology provides smooth gradations and superior reproduction from the highlights all the way to the shadows.

Color management and scanning technology
High-end scanners were one of the main products that established the Screen brand in the prepress industry. Our POD devices are make use of this expertise through built-in quality control scanners that can read a printed test chart and automatically correct any problems, ensuring reliable and remarkable print quality.

Optimal control technology
Precise imaging is essential for CtP exposure system as well as direct pattern imaging for printed circuit boards. This technique has not been adopted on our POD devices. The Truepress Jet650UV for example, features a dedicated CCD camera that detects registration marks on printing media and automatically adjusts the alignment to ensure consistent registration accuracy.

High productivity
Imaging head assembling know-how
For each POD device, Screen has used the most appropriate technology to achieve the best performance. The Truepress Jet520's inkjet heads are mounted in Screen's unique single-pass multiple head array, which enables high speed printing with superior quality. The distances between inkjet heads for each color, as well as the distance from the inkjet heads to the media, are short, ensuring exceptional color-to-color-registration.

Media transportation technology
Media transportation plays an important role for automation, quality and productivity. The Truepress Jet650UV’s use of a linear motor drive enables a top speed of 1,300 cm2/min (under Screen’s recommended conditions). The combination of the linear motor drive, the unique multiple printhead array (up to 32 printheads can be installed), and the high-powered UV light source results in the highest productivity in the world for an industrial printing system.

High-precision manufacturing
Screen’s philosophy has always been to turn technology into customer values and precision engineering lies at the heart of the whole process. Screen's POD devices are completely manufactured at our factories in Kyoto all of which have certified ISO quality management systems. The quality of our POD devices rely on the consistency of production that comes from such systems.

Integration of cutting edge technologies
In 2001 Inca Digital shipped the world’s first commercial digital flatbed printer and since then the company has remained at the forefront of development in the wide format digital inkjet industry. By combining Inca’s expertise in wide format inkjet printing, with Screen’s long standing experience in the prepress industry, we can further strengthen and grow Inca and Dainippon Screen’s print on demand businesses.
